THE STORY
A grey morning that turned gold by six
It rained until about four. Nobody minded — or if they did, nobody said so, because the room upstairs was full of people who had flown a long way to be there and the champagne had been open since eleven.
Amara got ready in the corner room with the tall windows, her mother pinning something into her hair for twenty minutes and neither of them saying very much. Theo waited downstairs and pretended to read. By the time they saw each other the light had broken through the cloud and the whole valley went the colour of a peach, which is the sort of thing you cannot plan for and should never take credit for.
